The Order of Operations can be known as PEMDAS and either BIMDAS or BIDMAS. If you apply the order of operations in the correct order, you will arrive at the same answer regardless of the one you use.
The Order of Operations tells in us what order ( x / + -) to complete the parts of a sum. For example: 10 + 4 x 3 = 42 is incorrect. Why you ask? Because I have answered the question left to right and have not followed the 'Order of Operations' which is PEMDAS/BIMDAS. If I use PEMDAS or BIDMAS to answer the sum 10 + 4 x 3 = I would know that I would have to do the Multiplication FIRST!
10 + 4 x 3 =
12 + 10 = 22
Now for something a bit harder...
5 + (3 x 3) - 2 =
Follow the Order of Operations and see if you can arrive at the correct answer...
So first thing we notice is we have a set of parentheses. You need to work out the value in the brackets as this is the first step.
5 + (3 x 3) - 2 =
5 + (9) - 2
Next step is to add 5 + 9 = 14
Then we subtract 2.
5 + (9) - 2 = 12
